Luke Elworthy

Luke Elworthy’s first novel The Last Letter of Godfrey Cheathem was published to rave reviews last year. Luke was born in India, grew up in Wellington, attended Christchurch’s Christ’s College, and spent school holidays at Auckland’s Centrepoint commune. He worked in publishing in New Zealand and overseas before moving to Marlborough where, as well as writing his own work, he set up a writer’s residency trust to support other writers. Luke is chair of Rapaura Springs Garden Marlborough committee, which celebrates 30 years of Garden Marlborough this November.

The Last Letter of Godfrey Cheathem

Luke Elworthy in conversation with Jason Henry

Luke Elworthy discusses The Last Letter of Godfrey Cheathem, a satire that explores being the average sibling in a family of creative geniuses and pokes fun at Kiwi life. Luke reflects on his teen years at a conservative boarding school and a commune, his publishing work, and life in Marlborough.
